Our Residential Casting and Fishing courses offer clients a truly unique highland experience unlike any other.

I have found this format for Casting Courses to be superior to One-to-One Casting Tuition.

The course accommodates a maximum of 6 rods (typically 4-5), making it perfect for a 3-day residential experience. The term "residential" indicates that the package includes all meals and accommodation. A chef will prepare evening meals while I handle breakfast. The kitchen will be stocked for you to prepare your own packed lunch. The course is tailored to individual needs, with 95% of the experience focused on what you wish to learn, complemented by a few group demonstrations on the river. You will fish in a pool either solo or with one other rod, depending on river conditions and Ghillies' instructions, while I provide 15-20 minutes of personalized guidance for each guest. This method allows for gradual learning over three days, preventing information overload. This tried-and-true approach has proven effective over time, and a group of 5 or 6 participants works exceptionally well.

These three-day Salmon Fishing experiences, fully hosted by Ian Gordon, blend casting and fishing instruction with Ian's extensive knowledge of salmon fishing in Scotland. From the history of fly fishing to the region's connections with the whisky industry, enjoy a cultural and historical journey with one of Scotland's most knowledgeable salmon fishing guides and storytellers.

Experience casting and fishing at Deveronside Fishing in stunning private surroundings. After a rewarding day on the River Spey, unwind with Ian over a dram at Waterside Lodge, discussing tackle, techniques, or simply soaking in the highland culture while listening to tales of big salmon caught and lost. Ian will keep you entertained throughout the three days, providing top-notch casting and fishing tuition. Breakfasts will be prepared by Ian at 8 am, with lunches and evening meals served in the lodge.

I joined one of Ian’s spring casting courses. I am not a regular fisherman and I needed coaching to improve and develop my casting. The course was very well organised, the casting coaching was outstanding and it was very enjoyable. It helped me enormously.

Discover Deveronside Fishing, a hidden gem in Scotland offering 6 miles of double bank fishing for up to 6 rods. While the primary focus of the course is on casting techniques, there's ample opportunity for fishing, especially in late April and early May when spring salmon and fantastic Brown Trout are available.

The Lodge features 3 double rooms and 2 twin rooms, each with an en-suite or private bathroom. Non-fishing guests sharing a room are welcome for an additional fee.

This course is designed for those who have some fishing experience but feel they could enhance their skills, equipment usage, or overall fishing knowledge. With a group size of 4 to 6 participants, expert ghillie Carl, a skilled salmon fisherman and top Trout angler, will provide guidance throughout your time on the river. The diverse fishing opportunities and exceptional service will delight any trout enthusiast.

This residential course emphasizes individual attention, focusing on personal fishing styles, casting, and tackle.

Experienced or a beginner, this course is designed to focus on casting and fishing, utilising Ian’s wide knowledge of both and covering tactics that will make you a better Salmon and Sea Trout Angler as well as a proficient caster. This is a small rod river with much focus on today's popular rod lengths of rods between 11' and 13'6".

Over the 3 days we will look at the following -

• Casting off the opposite shoulder - Why?
• The principles of casting with sunk lines and sink tips. Tactics - Why?
• Teaching you to Fault Find.
• How to fish a typical pool with the floating line.
• Lunch at the hut.
• Hooking, Playing, and Landing fish – The theory!
• Instruction and practice followed by a couple of hours of actual fishing in order to be able to relax and practice the techniques learned during the day.
• Knots, How to tie flies and leaders.

• Those Residential Casting and Fishing courses give everyone lots of time for casting/fishing/tackle theory with questions and answers. Although light-hearted, those sessions I find invaluable in the overall development of individual understanding.

Early Salmon tend to run to the middle and upper reaches of the Deveron at this time and is the first weeks of the season where, given good conditions [Water levels] there is a chance of a fish.
