A recent trip with clients fishing for Bonefish and Permit on the flats, followed by Tarpon fishing in deep water. Despite challenging conditions on the flats, we caught some nice large Bonefish and small Tarpon. However, the Tarpon fishing was extraordinary. Initially, some clients approached live bait fishing with skepticism, however, after two days and 53 fish averaging 45+lbs each, including several over 100lbs, their skepticism was quickly replaced by sheer excitement at playing so many fish and having so much action in what must be one of the worlds best Tarpon fisheries. The joke after day one was - "The fly rods are going on eBay!"

After a lifetime of enjoying my flyfishing for salmon and other species, and frankly, like so many, beginning to lose faith in catching salmon, this latest experience reminded me that, irrespective of method, fishing is fishing and that “one man’s meat is another man’s poison”!  The sheer elation of my guests to have so much fantastic, raw action over the last days, with fish after fish, brought back those great memories of my first fish on the Ugie and the unforgettable day on the Spey. In all my years hosting fishing, I've never seen a group so happy. Everyone caught so many big fish I’m sure their arms were an inch longer.

I had targeted this time of the year to coincide with the run of big migratory tarpon, which frankly, having caught three over 100lbs, I’d no longer want to do again, however, when I next return the target will be lots of 15 – 40lb fish. and those will be targeted on the fly as well as live bait. But should you like to join me on this amazing trip, a word of warning. Make sure you are ready for some serious fighting and the line being tight more times than its slack. Be prepared to catch the biggest fish of your life and have the time of your life, because for sure, it's going to happen, and you are about to have the most memorable fishing experience of your life.

This Trip Will Fill Up Very Quickly for 2026

Trip Testimonials

An unforgettable experience!

Our fishing trip in Trinidad and Tobago was nothing short of amazing. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking, and the guides were incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. Whether it was reeling in a massive tarpon in Trinidad or stalking for bonefish and permits on the flats of Tobago, every moment felt like a true adventure. If you’re looking for the perfect mix of excitement and natural beauty, this is the place to be. I can’t wait to come back!”

Martial Chaussy

We enjoyed each hour of fishing. Our guide in Tobago brought us very close to hook permits. Because of our no precise casting the very first day we did not hook one. But we had Baby Tarpon both in Tobago.

Trinidad was different - no flyfishing - but we would not like to miss this part of the trip. To fight strong and heavy fish is every‘s fisherman‘s dream. To get to this we had to accept the spinning gear as a compromise. Even a flyfishing hardliner and 150% flyfishing purist like Horst had very much fun fighting these big Tarpon and Jack Trevally on a spinning rod.

We are very certain: good guides decide if you catch fish or not. Both places we had fabulos guides. The way how they were hunting for fish was unbelievable! Both of them we accept immediatly, again.

Last point: The members of our party did well together. Couldn‘t be better!

Summary: Flats fishing with the fly is indispensable for all of your trips: This is Ian Gordon!!!

Big Tarpon on spinning gear is an additional highlight that can not be done with same success within 2 days on a fly rod.

It is very important for us to say thank you for the excellent organisation of this memorable trip and the inimitable way you took care of each of us.

Herman Zwisler and Horst Rathgeber

The organisation was fantastic and I have no complaints about our flights, accommodation, meals and transfers. Well done Ian.

The flats fishing didn’t work for me but that was more to do with it being new to me, very windy conditions and I was out of my comfort zone. However, I loved the concept but on reflection, we should have been allowed to blind fish more while the other rod was spot fishing. I would do it again, but be better prepared for what is required, and ask to fish blind more often. This gives me the practice I need and keeps your rhythm. It is very exciting when you spot a Bone fish or have a Permit following your fly, I just needed more confidence so I can cope with that style of fishing. Great Villa, food, transfers and guides.

The Tarpon trip in Trinidad made the trip for me. Great Hotel, fantastic restaurant, high quality boat and very good guides. However, again with hindsight, while going for the big Tarpon was great fun, more smaller fish would have been better and easier on the muscles!

I would consider this again, but not this year.

Best of all was being there with you guys. Great company. Thank you.

Ian Sinclair

On reflection, a fantastic experience with a great group of fly fishing enthusiasts

That great expression - Fail to Plan - Plan to Fail - certainly applies here

The effort & preplanning that Ian put into this trip was incredible & meticulous

As I said, I have always believed that success comes to those who are prepared to go that extra mile - our host comes into that category

He researched the best time to go, the best guides, the correct rods - reels - flies

He helped us get the correct gear in terms of clothing etc

He took the time & trouble to help us with new casting techniques that us Spey casting anglers had little experience of

Nothing was too much trouble & that is Ian Gordon to a tee

Thank you, Ian for a memorable few days
