Vatnsdalsa

Salmon Fishing Heaven

The Vatnsdalsá: One of Icelands Few Big Salmon Rivers

The rugged valley of Vatnsdalur in northern Iceland, is home to the Vatnsdalsá River, an internationally recognised and one of the country’s most prized Atlantic salmon rivers.

This sizable river, has three different beats, with all, lower, middle and upper running on a strict, long-standing catch-and-release basis. Being the first Icelandic river to adopt this policy is testimony to how important the owners see  conservation in those days of declining numbers of fish and in trying to protect it great run of multi-sea-winter fish. The Vatnsdalsá can support up to 8 rods, but for the most is fished with only 6. this provides each angler with a huge amount of water to fish over three varied beats.

River Character & Unrivalled Variety.

The Vatnsdalsá offers a stunning combination of very different, yet classic salmon pools, some with gentle wading, and amazing visual fishing, whilst others, in the upper part of the river are beautifully scenic rocky gorges, with large salmon hiding in those deep pools. Our Microspey rods with their light lines are just the ticket here for delicate presentations.

The Middle & Lower Valley:

As the river emerges into the wide, peaceful valley, it settles into sweeping gravel runs, grassy cutbacks, and deep, glassy pools. These lower reaches offer effortless wading, expansive swings, and some of the most consistent holding water in the country. The river features famed pools like Hnausastrengur and Stekkjarfoss—names known to Atlantic salmon purists worldwide for consistently producing multi-sea-winter fish.

The Vatnsdalsá Salmon:

High Percentage of 2SW FishUnlike many Icelandic rivers dominated by smaller grilse, the Vatnsdalsá is celebrated for its extraordinary average size.Size Profile: Roughly half of all salmon landed here exceed 10 lbs, with multiple fish in the 20 to 25+ lb bracket landed every single season.

Surface Tactics:

Thanks to the river’s extraordinary clarity and steady flow, these big salmon are famously eager to rise. Fished on a floating line, micro-hitches, Sunray Shadows, small black tubes, and Frances patterns fished close to the surface draw dramatic, memorable strikes.

Prime Seasonal Windows:

July vs. September We host clients on the Vatnsdalsá during the two peak phases of the run.

July:

The Peak Fresh Run July is prime time for volume and fresh sea-run fish. The main arrival of multi-sea-winter salmon meets the first wave of fast, aggressive grilse pushing up from the coast. Long daylight, warm water, and eager fish make this the quintessential Icelandic summer fishing experience.

September:

Big Fish HuntingSeptember transforms the river. As autumn color settles over the valley, the large 2SW and 3SW fish that have populated the pools all summer become increasingly aggressive and territorial. Cooler water calls for small, dark patterns, micro-tubes, or stealthy hitching on light tackle, giving anglers an unmatched opportunity to target the river’s largest, mature fish.
