Swallow - My favourite spring fly, I named this fly “The Swallow” because it alludes to the spring and salmon like to do just that with it. One problem with this fly is fish tend to be hooked deep in the throat. I would suggest a set of forceps are not far away when fishing this. Best tied on Copper Tube or up to size 3 Double.
Copper Stinchar – Fly for the summer months, a variant of the famous “Stinchar stoat” but without the full orange hackle. I use this fly as the water begins to clear. Tie on a size 7 - 9.
Slum Dog - My most successful fly ever, I started tying this pattern in the mid 1970s. My best days salmon fishing ever came whilst using this fly, 13 Salmon whilst fishing the Deveron in September 1980. It fishes best with a slight touch of colour in the water. Always tie on a single or double. Size 7 - 9
Bobby Dazzler - Inspired by the Teal and Silver, I developed this fly fly during a good weeks fishing in June with two friends called Bob, both of whom caught fish on the fly that week. My good friend and great fly tier, John Band, modified the fly by adding jungle cock cheeks. Best in low water tied on a double or single size 7 - 9. A great Sea Trout fly also.
Blue Futtret - Named after the North east name for a Ferret, The Futtret is a simple fly I developed some years ago for Sea Trout. It works best tied on a heavy tube and fished either on an Intermediate or sink tip line. One of the most Deadly Patterns I have ever used for Sea Trout. Best fished on a sunk tip after Trout have gone off the small fly fished on the surface. They are also designed to be converted into the most deadly salmon lure I know!!!!????
A simple but deadly pattern for Sea Trout
Orange Futtret - Named after the North east name for a Ferret, The Futtret is a simple fly I developed some years ago for Sea Trout.
Copper Shadow – Similar to that of the Copper Stinchar but tied in my style with a tail, also black and orange bucktail mix. Hook size 8 – 12 in Black or Gold. A great fly to fish as the water clears.
Copper Munro – My version of this classic, this fly fished on a sink tip as the last of the snow comes off the hills and the river begins to warm up, can be deadly. Many of my big late spring days on the Spey have come on this fly. Tie on size 5 - 9, black or gold hook.
Jimmy Grey - This fly was tied and named by Spey Superintendant, Jimmy Gray. This simple pattern fishes very well in late spring – April – June, best tied on Doubles size 5 - 9
Rosy – A variant of the Garry Dog, this is a killer in coloured and colder water. Tied on either gold or silver hook, it is my favourite fly in these conditions. it can be tied on a tube, double or single, size 7 – 9.
Red Munro - Classic Killer but tied on either a gold or silver single or double. Fish when the river is clearing, best tied on hook size 5 - 7. Finish this with a red head.
Red Capper –Tied in my style, the original was tied with the hair from my black Cocker Spaniel. I use this fly in clear water during the summer. Tie on black, silver or gold doubles and trebles size 7 - 9
Flash - This was named after my old golden Lab, “Flash Gordon”. Who was ever present with my father and I on the river bank. A fly for coloured water or as the river begins to rise or fall, this is best tied on size 5 - 7, silver single or double.
Yalla [Yellow] Moose - I created the various “Moose” patterns to be fished in clear low water and particularly at dusk and found all very good for Grilse when fished in those conditions. Tie very sparsely on a silver or gold double or treble size 7 - 9.
Foggy Moose - I created the various “Moose” patterns to be fished in clear low water and particularly at dusk and found all very good for Grilse when fished in those conditions. Tie very sparsely on a silver or gold double or treble size 7 - 9.
Braw Moose - I created the various “Moose” patterns to be fished in clear low water and particularly at dusk and found all very good for Grilse when fished in those conditions. Tie very sparsely on a silver or gold double or treble size 7 - 9.
Reed [Red] Moose - I created the various “Moose” patterns to be fished in clear low water and particularly at dusk and found all very good for Grilse when fished in those conditions. Tie very sparsely on a silver or gold double or treble size 7 - 9.
Firey Swallow - Like all of my flies, this is a simple pattern which works best when the water is cold and slightly peaty. Half - 2 inch Copper Tube
