Ian Gordon
Spey on Line

Casting and Fishing courses can be combined. I tend to arrange those for later in the season when there are more fish in the river.
No matter how experienced, this course is designed to focus on casting and fishing, utilising Ian’s wide knowledge of both and covering tactics which will make you a better Salmon and Sea Trout Angler as well as a proficient caster.

• Casting off the opposite shoulder - Why?
• The principles of casting with sunk lines and sink tips. Tactics - Why?
• Fault Finder.
• How to fish a typical pool with the floating line.
• Lunch at the hut (generally provided by the hotel).
• Hooking, Playing and Landing fish – The theory!
• Instruction and practice followed by a couple of hours of actual fishing in order to be able to relax and practice the techniques learned during the day.
• Knots, How to tie flies and leaders

• For Casting and Fishing courses include an evening of casting/fishing/tackle theory with questions and answers. Although light hearted, those sessions I find invaluable in the overall development of individual understanding.

The 3 day Fishing/Casting course will be for up to five people and booked on a first come first served basis.

Due to demand I am planning a further and final 4 day course in September on Lower Invercauld. Please see below for those dates.

As this is a lovely time to be on the river I'm afraid those dates will be booked on a first come basis.

If the Dee is the world’s best spring river, then at the end of June, there is no better place to be than the River Spey. For my thrid fishing course of the year I have secured fish one of the most famous and private beats on the Spey. The Castle Water is part of the Gordon Castle Fishing who control an incredible 8 miles of, and account annually for between 10 and 15% of the rivers total catch.

This is a 6 rod beat and like all beats I use on the Spey, is double bank. It boast some of the nicest pools on the river and at this time of the year offers a great chance of a few fish. The beat has a Ghillie or Guide and also has exclusive use of both banks which are accessed by boat.

Although casting instruction will very much be part of this course, this is intended to be a hosted fishing course with emphasis of learning to fish, how to read pools, where and on what line to wade, what types of flies, lines and general tactics to deploy in each given scenario.

This can also be an ideal course for those who are more experienced fishers who feel they don’t catch their fair share or are frustrated by not getting that line to turn over in a head wind.
Ultimately it will provide an opportunity to learn, have fun and catch a few fish too.

I cannot think of a nicer place than this middle to upper beat on the wonderful Royal Dee to hold my first casting/fishing courses of the season.
The river Dee is the World’s best River for early running salmon and we have exclusive access to 7 miles, or more than 40 of the most lovely and varied pools on this wonderful river.

This not only provides you with a chance to learn to cast, but the varied nature of those pools also provide you with the opportunity of learning to “read” pools of different character, find out where, in those particular conditions, fish are likely to lie and what are the best tactics to catch them.

I will run two, 3 days courses this spring on the last week of March, each will have no more than 5 people which over the 3 days will ensure you will have lots of individual one to one guidance. The first of those will run from the 26th - 28th, with the second 29th- 31st.

Accommodation can be arranged in nearby Ballater which has some lovely hotels and B&Bs.
Please contact me here to book your place, drop me an e mail ian@speyonline.com or call me on +44[0]7786120436 if you have any questions.
